About the speakers:

Christopher Newborn, a member of Department of Defense (DoD) Acquisition and Cybersecurity Workforce, was appointed as a Professor of Information Technology (Cybersecurity Emphasis) at the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) in August 2015. Mr. Newborn duties include developing curriculum, teaching, and consulting members of the Acquisition and Cybersecurity Workforce who are responsible for acquiring, Deploying, and maintaining cybersecurity capabilities and defending DoD’s networks, systems, and data.

Before his appointment at DAU, Mr. Newborn served as the acting Director of Cybersecurity for Program Executive Office of Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (PEO C4I); the Cybersecurity Workforce Integrated Product Team (IPT) Co-Chair for the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Command; the Cybersecurity Working Group Lead for PEO C4I; and the Acquisition Manager for Information Assurance (IA) & Cybersecurity Program Office.

Mr. Newborn has over 17 years of IA/Cybersecurity experience regarding Access Control, Telecommunications and Network Security, Information Security Governance and Risk Management, Cryptography, Security Architecture and Design, Operations Security, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning. Mr. Newborn also has over 25 years of Program, Project, and Portfolio Management experience concerning cost, schedule, performance, risk, and managed projects requiring the execution of $80M annually. In addition to his Cybersecurity and Program Management experience, Mr. Newborn has over 17 years of Contracts experience concerning cost estimation, Scope of Work/Statement of Objectives development and evaluation, Contracting Office Representative monitoring and execution, and Technical Evaluation Board responsibility.

Mr. Newborn is a graduate of Morehouse College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Science degree in Management. He has also obtained the Global Information Assurance Security Leadership Certificate (GSLC), the Global Information Assurance Information Security Professional (GISP), the Global Strategic Planning, Policy, and Leadership (GSTRT), and the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certifications.

Paul Shaw, DAU Professor for Cybersecurity. Doctorate of Science (DSc) Candidate in Cybersecurity (Capitol Technology University) - expected doctorate completion 2018; five Master’s Degrees (Systems Engineering, IT, International Relations, Finance, and Management); and BS Ocean Engineering (USNA).

Professional Certifications: Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP), Security+, IEEE Professional Software Engineering Master (PSEM) Certification, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and 16 other NDU certifications, NSA Certifications – 4011, 4012, 4015, & 4016, Acquisition Corps Member, DAWIA level IIIs (IT, Engineering, PM, and LCL), and DAWIA Level IIs (S&T, PQM, and T&E).

Former DoN Navy Civilian for 14 years - Navy's Cyber Ops IPT Lead for Joint Information Environment, Former Navy Civilian PM (Navy Data Environment), former Navy Functional Data Manager (Navy's Command and Control Portfolio Manager), and IT Technical Authority. Retired Navy Reserve CAPT (06) after 30 years of service (active and reserve). Former Naval Aviator and Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO). Served on active duty five times to include a mobilization to Afghanistan as the theater mission lead for Persistent Ground Surveillance Systems (a $600 million dollar JCTD with 400 contractors and 15 military officers across 48 operational sites that provide over 170,000 ISR surveillance hours during 2011).

Navy senior leadership positions included Chief of Staff, Commanding Officer (twice), Officer in Charge, and Executive Officer. Joint Qualified Officer (JQO) Level III. Commercial experience includes President of a Start-up Company, junior partner in a Technology Licensing firm, Chief Information Officer and VP Technology Licensing, and MIS Manager for a start-up company. Numerous personal awards and medals to include a military Legion of Merit for supporting 63 combat operations and 1,500 combat patrol over watches that resulted in over 400 targeting engagements, over 400 criminal prosecutions of Taliban/Al-Qaeda, capture of over 20,000 tons of drugs and explosives, destruction of over 300 weapon cashes, and a 95 percent reduction of the effectiveness of enemy Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) against US and Coalition forces in Afghanistan.
